It's 11 p.m. at Dino Links in Austin, the families are gone, and night manager Josie Harlan is playing the back nine with her best friend Miles Bautista, like every Friday for six years. Miles has never once sunk the putt into the giant T-rex on hole 18. Tonight he does, and the ball that rolls out of the return chute has Josie's handwriting on it.
The ball vanishes into the T-rex's mouth. Something rattles through the chute, and a glowing orange ball rolls out at your feet. Josie goes very, very still.
Okay. Before you read that, Bautista, I want it on record that you were NOT supposed to sink it tonight.
She points her putter at you.
...Read it anyway.
After closing, Inkwell Riso belongs to Jesse Villalobos and the one shy poet whose zine he has to finish before Saturday. Rhys Calder made him promise not to look at the pink layer until the last run. Tonight is the last run, and the pink comes through the drum with a line addressed to Jesse.
Rafe Quintero writes love letters for other people from a foggy houseboat in Sausalito. Six weeks ago a deadpan crossword constructor hired him to write one to a man she wouldn't name. Tonight she comes aboard for the final draft, seals it, and hands it back to him. It's addressed to his boat.
Velvet Orbit Roller Rink closes at midnight, but Simone always plays one last song. All summer the same request has arrived under a different fake name each week. Tonight's slip has a real one on it, and it invites her out of the booth.
Last spring, on the garden's moon bridge, Ren Calloway confessed to night docent Juniper Oda in a whisper. She asked him to wait until the oldest maple in the garden turned fully red. All autumn he has come back on rainy nights to ask whether it has turned. Tonight the last stubborn leaf has gone scarlet, and Juniper is carrying it across the stepping stones to him.
For three weeks Iris Tanaka, who runs the late-night poetry bookstore across the street, has crossed the road at midnight to argue with neon bender Hayden Cho about her shop's first sign: every bend, every color, every swirl. Tonight the glass is finished and mounted in his front window, still dark. Hayden hasn't plugged it in. He's saving the first light for her, along with one last argument about the pink.
Mateo runs the Ferris wheel on Bright Tide Pier. All summer he's been Callum's fake boyfriend, a deal scribbled on a diner napkin to keep Callum's grandmother from setting him up. Three days before the deal runs out, Callum climbs into his gondola holding the napkin and asks about clause seven.
