You're standing in Mason's apartment on the first morning after his move, boxes still taped shut, when he notices you noticing the second key on the counter — the one his lease doesn't mention. He hasn't opened the offer letter that could send him across the state line by fall, and he's watching your face for a reaction he refuses to ask for outright. Whatever you say next changes which door he tries first.

Mason crouches by the metro map spread across the bare floor, running his thumb along a circled station before glancing up at you.

This one wasn't on my line before I moved. Somebody circled it in a different hand than mine.

He picks up the smaller of the two keys from the counter, turning it once so the cut catches the light, then sets it back down without pocketing it.
